Ghost Net Initiative

Abandoned fishing nets drift free in Australia’s northern waters and kill marine life.  The ghost nets can weigh up to 10 tonnes and measure more than 16km long, making them difficult to remove and deadly for unwitting sea animals.  The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Helipower, along with local rangers, surveyed the oceans for from Bamaga, Cape York (Queensland) around to Groote Eyelandt (Northern Territory) for ghost nets.
